Review:  I like this book, it’s a fun counting book for kids with a different take on the traditional ‘This Little Piggy’ rhyme. A board book that’s a little smaller than A5 in size, it’s filled with thick glossy cardboard pages which have some lovely and funny illustrations and text. Each page is curved on the orcners making it more comfortable for kids to touch and hold.

Every double page of the book features a number in the corner from 1 to 10 and a rhyme to go with that number. The first one is “One Little Piggy went to market” but the next rhyme on the next page is “Two little piggies had a car but couldn’t park it”. The rest of the numbers then follow this rhyming pattern while the situations described are all a little silly. Throughout the pages there are images of the piggies, with more and more of them gradually appearing, as well as their parents in some pictures. The last double page features a chart with all ten numbers shown and the different amount of piggies for each number, so one piggy for the number 1, two piggies standing next to each other for 2, etc. This lovely chart, which is also very colourful, just adds a little extra counting fun which can really help kids to learn their numbers without the story.

The illustrations are so fun. I do like Jarvis’s illustration style already, in previous books I’ve read, but the piggies in this book and the fun they get up to just looks so silly. I love the fact that each little piggy is a very different character with different colouring, markings and even accesories, like one wearing glasses! The images are all so simple and yet there’s fun little extra things to look for in each pictures such as the blue bird that is on every page and comments on something happening such as saying “Uh-oh!” when the piggies have eaten all the potatoes that dad piggy wanted.

Although this counting book is very fun and the rhyming is generally very good, I do think that some of the rhymes don’t quite work. Most of them rhyme very well but there are a couple of rhymes where it just doesn’t sound so good, words like ‘agreed’ and ‘be’ just don’t sound right and it would be so easy to just drop the d on agreed, readjusting the sentence slightly to make it rhyme with ‘be’ and sound much better, especially as it’s the last rhyme of the book. There’s also another couple of words which said with the wrong accent for me just doesn’t work. It’s a minor issue though and doesn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of this book, but it just would have been nice to have a smoother rhyming experience considering the rest of the book really works well.

This is a lovely book and I like the new take on the this little piggy story. It’s definitely a fun book and I’m sure lots of kids (and adults) will enjoy reading this.
