Today is a special day as it’s my birthday and I turn another year older. Birthday’s have always been something I’ve enjoyed celebrating, and I’ve always felt like they should be acknowledged in some way, if just to celebrate your own existence in this amazing and sometimes crazy world. This year, like many, there has been something dark looming over our lives and many of us haven’t been able to celebrate our birthdays the way we want to. But that doesn’t mean we still can’t have some form of fun! Today, in celebration of my birthday and for my love of finding things out, I thought I’d share some interesting history moments that all happened on 13th November, and some fun extra facts about me too! 🙂
13th November 1553 – The trial of Lady Jane Grey
When Henry VIII died, his son Edward VI took over as king. Despite his young age, Edward ruled over England for several years before his death in 1553 at the age of 15. Henry VIII had set up his daughter Mary to take over as monarch if Edward didn’t have an heir, but Edward didn’t want his catholic older sister to take his place. So he wrote a new will putting Lady Jane Gray as the new monarch of England. Unfortunately for Lady Jane though, Mary got her way and on the 13th November 1553, Lady Jane Grey, her husband Guildford Dudley, his brothers Ambrose and Henry, and Archbishop Thomas Cranmer were tried for treason at a public trial at London’s Guildhall.
Fun facts: I’ve always been fascinated by history and Tudor history especially ever since I first learned about it at the age of ten at school. I would love to dress up in a Tudor style dress and walk around all day in it!
13th November 1895 – First shippment of pinapple from Hawaii
Though the evidence is disputed, this is widely mentioned as the day that pinapples were first shipped from Hawaii, and weirdly also the same day of the year, in 1898, that the founder of now global brand Del Monte () first went to Hawaii to start growing pinapples!
Fun facts: I love pinapples and have always loved to eat them from a tin, until I discovered the joys of cutting up a pinapple for myself, even though it’s laborious! I have never understood the fascination of putting pinapples, which to me are fruit, together with ham and other savory things which are not sweet. It’s just always tasted ‘Uck’ to me! 😮
12th November 1940 – ‘Fantasia’ released
On this day the Walt Disney movie Fantasia was releaed in America. The movie which features a symphony rather than the usual Disney talking animation, and is just over two hours long, didn’t do very well upon its release. Because it was during the war, there wasn’t a chance for those in Europe to see the film, but it has now become known as a classic.
Fun fact: I could never understand Fantasia when I first watched it and it just made no sense and felt so boring to my child eyes and mind. I can appreciate it more now as an adult, but I won’t lie, I’m still not a fan of the film and would prefer almost any other Disney film over it. 😮
So there you have it some interesting events that have happened on this day in history! 🙂 There are many more I can share, but I wanted to write a quick post as I’m actually writing this up just last night before going to bed, lol! I hope you have a lovely day today, and an especially lovely one if it’s your birthday, as I know one blogger who I’m friends with who shares the same balloon day as me. 😀 And now I’ll leave you with a fun few extra facts about me, some you may have heard of but some you may have not…
- My favourite colour is Pink.
- I don’t believe in the superstition of Friday the 13th.
- I grew up officially as a millenial, but sometimes feel older (and sometimes younger) in the 80s and 90s. (not gonna share my actual age just yet😂).
- My favourite animal is the cat. My favourite bird is the peacock.
- One of my favourite musics to listen to apart from 90s pop tracks (yes I do listen to them over and over still🤪!) is videogame music! I cam replay all the tracks from The Sims and Sonic games and never get bored. 🤭🤣🤣
Did you enjoy this post? What facts do you have about this day? Do we share anything in common? Do you believe in Friday the 13th? Let me know what you think in the comments below 🙂
