Today I’m feeling excited as I have a book to show you that I just wasn’t expecting to receive at all! 😮 A little while ago I was lucky enough to receive an email with an opportunity to request and read this middle grade (older children’s) novel. However like almost all of my emails recently, this one landed in my spam box instead 🙄 and I didn’t notice it until a couple of days later. Recently I’ve noticed that if I request a book just a couple of days later than the email I got, it means I’ve missed out, so naturally having emailed the publisher back two days later I thought I’d missed my chance.
The reason I was late is that I just don’t get notified of any spam emails until I check them via my laptop, and everybody seems to be so quick to respond thanks to emails via phones these days (I know I’m old-fashioned for not using it!). 🙂 But anyway I still took the chance, I still requested the book and then got on with my day. I actually forgot about the book completely the next day onwards, until it suddenly showed up posted through my door just over a week ago! I just can’t believe it! 😄 So what book has me all excited you might ask?
The Elephant in the Room by Holly Goldberg Sloan – It’s been almost a year since Sila’s mum travelled halfway around the world to Turkey, hoping to secure the immigration paperwork that would allow her to return to her family in the United States.
The long separation is almost impossible for Sila to bear. But things change when Sila accompanies her father (who is a mechanic) outside their Oregon town to fix a truck. There, behind an enormous stone wall, she meets a grandfatherly man who only months before won the state lottery. Their new alliance leads to the rescue of a circus elephant named Veda, and then to a friendship with a unique boy named Mateo, proving that comfort and hope come in the most unlikely of places.
Doesn’t this sound so amazing? I love the name, the play on the term of the elephant in the room, but also because it’s literally an elephant in the room! 😀 😂
